Anfield Road school record book

Fe gafodd Ysgol Anfield Road, Lerpwl, ei ddatnwyo i Langynfelyn yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel (1939-43). Mae copi llyfr cofnodion yr ysgol yn Archifdy Ceredigion. Anfield Road school, Liverpool, was evacuated to Llangynfelyn during the Second World War (1939-43). A copy of the school record book for the period is in Ceredigion Archives.

The Record Book

This log book has not been compared with the evacuation log books and registers held by Anfield Road Primary School, where they are used by the children in the study of local history.

The dates have been standardised, and the days of the week, where given, have been added to the entry.

Taliesin School is now Ysgol Llangynfelyn.

1939, Sept. 1

86 children with 9 teachers and 6 helpers left Breck Rd Station at 9.10 a.m where they entrained for Borth. Arrived at 2.10, taken by bus to Taliesin. Children billeted [sic] in village & in Treddol but some as far distant as Ynyslas - 3 mls from Taliesin. 11 Juniors joined our Party making 97.

1939, Sept. 2

All Chrn visited by Tr or Helper & postcards sent to Parents.

1939, Sept. 3

Service taken by Vicar at 3.15 in Church Hall, after which Head Tr told chrn the arrangements for the following week.

1939, Sept. 4-8

Chrn went for walks or played in field behind School during usual Sch. hours, while Helpers visited homes assistant [sic] in various ways. Several chrn visited Clinic on Tues & Thurs.

1939, Sept. 9

All staff attended Meeting at Aberystwyth presided over by Director, Mr Owen and Mr Smith - H.M.I’s.

1939, Sept. 11

School commenced at 1 p.m. Session from 1-5 pm this week, the home School taking the morning Session. 96 children were enrolled.

1939, Sept. 12

Mr Lewis, Director, visited. Miss Marsh visited Talybont.

1939, Sept. 13

Miss Wright transferred to Talybont School as there are 22 chrn attending who came with their Mothers - only 5 infants. Miss Marsh visited Talybont School.

1939, Sept. 15

Dispersal of Chrn about field behind School, taken by Head Tr. in form of little Game, where they lay flat on grass. They responded very quickly to the whistle.

1939, Sept. 18

16 chrn have left over week-end either to return to L-pool or to be with their Mothers at Talybont. School is doing the morning Session this week from 8.30-12.30, but chrn were taken by Trs on Tues. [19th] aft. by buses to sea-shore at Ynys-las & on Thurs. [21st] aft. for Nature Ramble.

Miss Tonson & Miss Barker are also at Talybont School, where they are working a double shift.

1939, Sept. 25

8 chrn have left over the week-end either to return to L-pool or to Talybont. Roll now 72. Afternoon Session.

Miss Aspinwall & Miss Geally granted 1 day’s leave of absence to visit their homes. School Nurse visited during afternoon. Mr Lewis, Director of Education, visited during afternoon.

Morning Session. 8.30-12.30. 3 chrn left. 2 admitted. Roll 70. Four hours is too long at one time for Infants. Miss Marsh visited Talybont School Oct. 3. Chrn taken out on Tues & Thurs aft. for 1½ hrs by Trs.

Miss Graham & Miss Wilson granted leave of absence to visit L-pool.

Afternoon Session. 1-5 p.m. 12 chrn left, most on hearing of payment for billets. Welfare Worker & Assistant visited to comb each child’s head. 16 needed some attention.

Student from Chelsea Phys. Training School (Evacuated at Borth) took all Classes in Phys. Work during morning. Miss Marsh visited Talybont School.

Miss Wilson & Miss Graham absent with leave. Mr Roberts - School Dentist from L-pool - visited & examined teeth of all chrn.

1939, Nov. 6

Full time School commenced to-day, 9.12, 1-3.30 p.m. 8 chrn have returned to L-pool, leaving 35 on Roll. We are now sharing the School with the Welsh chrn & our chrn are accommodated in 1 Class Room. We are working in 3 Classes, 1 Junr & 2 of Infants. The long distance chrn - 8 in number - stay to lunch. A helper comes to make a hot drink & to supervise meal. Miss Gealy returned to duty. Now that we have commenced full time School, the afternoon walks which have taken place each Tues & Thurs will be discontinued, but chrn will still have some walks during Nature Periods.

Student took Physical Work in the Youth Hostel close to School, as the morning was wet. Miss Marsh visited Talybont School in the afternoon. Miss Hall on leave of absence. Miss Aspinwall teaching at Talybont where Miss Tonson is on leave of absence.

3 chrn returned to L-pool. Miss Marsh was called from School at 2.30 p.m. by Dr Jones as there was a case of Diptheria in house where she resided. She was absent for rest of week by Dr’s Orders. School Dentist visited during afternoon.

Dr Bevins visited during morning to commence Medical Inspection. Ray. Morgan was found to be a Diptheria Carrier & has been sent to Tanybwlch for treatment. Miss Gealy gave Miss Graham some assistance on Tues & Wed afts.

The childrens’ Guardians visited during afternoon to see the little Plays, Dances, Rhymes, Carols etc which had been prepared for Xmas. Mr & Mrs Eaves also came.

Our chrn entertained the Welsh chrn from 2.30 to 3.30 with the Programme they had given to ‘Guardians’ the previous day.

Miss Graham has gone to L-pool for her Xmas vacation. She returns on Dec 28th. Miss Marsh my sister is here & is taking Miss Graham’s place as I am not yet quite recovered from the "Inoculation".

Registers marked at 9. a.m. as chrn are leaving at 11.30 for lunch & returning at 12.45 to make a long afternoon for Xmas Party commencing at 1. p.m.

Mr Jones of Llonio visited & gave each child a Chocolate Novelty. Mr Eaves visited during morning. School Closed at 3.30 for Xmas Vacation.

1940, Jan. 8

School reopened after Christmas Vacation. 6 chrn returned to L-pool. Miss Marsh is in Liverpool on "sick list". Miss Graham in charge of school.

Dr Bevin visited during morning to see if there were any cases of Diptheria there were none.

Miss Gealy returned from holiday & remained to assist here, instead of going to Talybont School.

Mr Lewis Director of Education visited during the afternoon to see if a teacher could be spared to go to Eglwysfach. As Miss Marsh is still on Sick List in Liverpool this was not possible.

Miss Grant (Student) visited to take Physical Work. Miss Graham received intimation from Mr Lewis, Director of Education, that Miss Marsh would not be returning to Reception Area, as she had to remain in Liverpool under Medical Supervision and was asked to take charge of school in her absence.

Mr Owen H.M.I visited in the morning and saw children at work - was pleased with the way they applied themselves. In the afternoon the Welsh children entertained the Evacuees to a Programme of Plays, songs (in Welsh) dances etc from 2-3 oclock, in honour of St. David’s Day.

19 children on roll + 2 private evacuees. Part of Tuesday & Thursday afternoons children were taken for a nature walk. Miss Gealy divided her time between this school & Talybont.

Miss Tonson attended meeting at Education Office to arrange about holidays. It was decided that Miss Gealy should go from July 20-Aug 23rd, Miss Tilston from July 26th-Aug 30th and Miss Tonson from Aug 23rd-Sept 27th. Permission was also obtained from Director of Education to take the Taliesin school up to Talybont on Friday 19th to see an entertainment of Conjuring and Ventriloquist given by Mr Mitchell.

As a result of the H.M.I’s visit a change in rooms made. Liverpool school now in smallest classroom owing to the small numbers.

Mr Hughes was asked by Director to take any children over eight years of age, that might come from Liverpool; and Mr Evans agreed to take all children nine years and over, from Liverpool school at Talybont, into his school.

The party ended with games and carol singing which the children thoroughly enjoyed. School broke up for the Xmas holidays to re-open again on January 6th 1941.

A form in duplicate should be prepared & sent to the Billeting Local Authority for each child admitted to the school who is accommodated under the Government Evacuation Scheme (not with parent).

Also notify Billeting Local Authority of all unaccompanied children who leave school. Date & reason for leaving school should be stated.

Also names of absentees whose return home is known should also be notified.
